Bacterial Biosynthesis of nanoparticles and fluorescent nanoparticles "quantum dots" (Cu, Li, Cd, Te, Se, Ag, In, Pt, Ti, Co).

CdS fluorescent nanoparticles (quantum dots) biosynthesized by Antarctic bacteria. (A) Pseudomonas GC01 was grown under biosynthesis conditions and the fluorescence of cell pellets exposed to UV was evaluated every 24 h (7 days total incubation). (B) Bacterial fluorescence under biosynthesis conditions at 15 ◦ C was evaluated daily during 96 h. The effect of three different conditions on QDs biosynthesis was evaluated; (1) distilled water, (2) PBS and (3) citrate. (Published in Gallardo et al., 2014)

Morphology of Pseudomonas sp. strain during biosynthesis. Ultrathin section of bacterial cells exposed for 3 days to nanoparticle biosynthesis conditions. (A) A general view of untreated cells. (B) Cells grown under biosynthesis conditions. The inset shows a bacterial pole in which nanometric structures are accumulated (black arrows). (Published in Gallardo et al., 2014)

Application of Nanoparticles (biosensors, Quantum dots sensitized Solar Cells, Antimicrobial agents, Photodynamic Therapy, bioremediation, cell targeting, etc).

QDs sensitized solar cell (QDSSC) produced in our lab by using TiO2 NPs biosynthezised by a Bacillus mycoides strain isolated in Chile.  (Published in Órdenes et al., 2014). This is the first solar cell produced using nanomaterials biosynthesized by organisms and is the model of solar cell in witch we have tested other sensitizers such as bacterial pigments, dopped biosinthesized QDs, dopped nanoparticles and copper nanoparticles, among many others.

Biomimetic synthesis of nanoparticles (CdTe, CdSe, CdS, CuS, Li2S, Ag2S, AgSCd, TiO2, ZnS, CuO, Cu, among others).canoes, etc.)

Absorbance and fluorescence emission spectra of CdTe-GSH QDs synthesized by our biomimetic chemical method. A, samples were withdrawn at the indicated times. B, fluorescence of the as-produced CdTe-GSH QDs at the indicated times of synthesis and excited with UV light at 312 nm. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0030741.g001  (Published in Pérez-Donoso et al., 2012)
